A weekend in Sacramento, planned with Claude

July 24, 2026 · Wyndham Hudson

Here is how I normally plan a trip. I search Google, find a few spots, and drop them somewhere: a Google Doc, or a note in Bear, or I just favorite them and sort it out on the day. It works, sort of, but the plan ends up living in five places and none of them is the trip. This time I had two nights booked at the Kimpton Sawyer and the usual Friday-to-Sunday gap, so I tried something different. I opened Claude, connected it to TripTidy, and just talked.

Thinking out loud

I didn't ask for an itinerary. I asked questions. Where should we eat Friday? Somewhere with a bit of character, walkable from the hotel. Claude didn't hand back a single answer. It gave me a few, each with a reason: Frank Fat's, the 1939 institution where legislators cut deals; Prelude Kitchen & Bar, best-rated of the walkable options; Ella, if we wanted the grown-up night. We went back and forth. Coffee on Saturday turned into a short list, Blueprint and Terra Forte and a couple more, because I couldn't decide yet and didn't have to.

The good stuff came from the tangents. The drive up breaks nicely around Davis, so we talked about a stop: Jelly Belly, or just lunch and a wander. Then the part I'd never have found on my own, a steam excursion train along the river on Saturday morning, right next to the California State Railroad Museum, so the two stack into one easy block.

Where the plan actually lives

Here is what felt different. I never copied anything. As we settled things, Claude wrote them straight into TripTidy through the connector, not as bookings but as ideas: places I might go, sitting on the trip right next to the hotel I'd actually reserved. And when I'd floated three dinners, they didn't land as three competing rows. They landed as one “pick one” card, the alternatives grouped together the way I was holding them in my head.

Deciding together

Then the part that turned a list into a plan. I shared the trip with my wife, straight from the app. She didn't need Claude, an account to set up, or a screenshotted list. She opened TripTidy and saw the exact itinerary I did, ideas and all. Each “pick one” group was a single calm row until you tapped it, and then it opened into a little map of the options, so we could both see that Prelude and Frank Fat's were a short walk apart while another was across town. We swiped through them together, read why each made the list, and locked in the ones we were sure about. Prelude for Friday. Blueprint for coffee. The moment we picked, the alternatives cleared out.

We didn't decide everything, and that is the point. A few slots we left open on purpose, still a little carousel of options waiting for the mood on the day. A few more I'll lock over the next couple of days as things firm up. The ones we do book turn real on their own: when I reserve Prelude, the confirmation email quietly upgrades that idea into the actual reservation, same card, now with a table time and a way to change it.

That is the loop I always wanted. Dream in a chat, decide in the app, together, and stop scattering the plan across a Doc and a Bear note and a pile of favorites. Sacramento is still a week out. Some of it is locked, some of it is happily undecided, and all of it is finally in one place.
